SkinSmart™ Lyocell is the cellulose fiber the FTC officially defines as one made through a non-chemical organic solvent spin process. Translation: it's a wood-pulp fiber spun without harsh chemicals, which is why it won the EU Environmental Award in 2000. It's also OEKO-TEX Standard 100 product class 1 certified, the strictest tier, meaning it's safe enough for baby articles.
They start soft and stay soft. Most people tell us their SOS shirt feels like it's already been washed 100 times on the first wear. Because the softness comes from the fiber structure itself, not a chemical finish, it doesn’t wash out.
Built for it. In an independent trial of 40 adults with atopic dermatitis wearing SOS tees, 97% said it was softer than normal clothing, 55% noticed less itching, and 73% would recommend it to others with the same condition. A separate 4-week pediatric study at the Stegersbach Spa Health Centre in Austria found SkinSmart™ SOS sleepwear reduced scratching in people with mild to moderate dermatitis.
Three things. One: the yarn (SkinSmart™) is symmetrically rounded and friction-free, so it doesn’t scrape or chafe like normal cotton. Two: the fibers absorb 50% of their weight in moisture before feeling damp, beating cotton, polyester, nylon, even silk. Three: permanently embedded zinc oxide that’s clinically proven to be anti-inflammatory and skin-soothing. None of it washes out.
The fibers are hollow and thermo-regulating, so they breathe and cool naturally. Independent testing shows apparel made from lyocell and runs 1–2°C (about 2–4°F) cooler than normal apparel in hot humid weather. The yarn surface is also rounder and smoother than cotton, which is what makes it feel doughy soft instead of scratchy.
Minimal. SkinSmart™ has very low shrink rates compared to 100% cotton. Wash cold, tumble dry low, and you’re good for the long haul. We recommend skipping fabric softener since the fibers are already softer than what softener does for cotton.
